June 2, 2022 Farmingdale HS Senior Recipient of the Prestigious GFWC-NYS Olive B. O'Connor Music Award Each year, the Women's Club of Farmingdale (WCF), along with other NYS women's clubs, submits the name of a high school music student who meets the criteria for the prestigious Olive B. O'Connor $1,000 Music Award presented by the General Federation of Women's Clubs – NYS. The criteria require the winner to use the award for continued musical education. The applicant must submit a completed application, a letter of reference from an instructor of instrument or voice and performance samples for judging in any technological use, as well as an official, current school transcript and a short essay of the planned use of the award. The winner will then submit a copy of the music to be performed at the next GFWC-NYS Convention where the award will be presented. WCF member Bea Ferrari is very proud to have nominated Farmingdale High School senior Ben Hoffman. Ben is the second winner, nominated by Bea and the women's club, to receive this impressive award. His qualifications include vocal and instrumental abilities. He plays trombone for the high school's Wind Ensemble (advanced band), the school's marching band and pep band and Lead Trombone for the school's Jazz Band. He sings Tenor for the high school's Mixed Chorus and Vocal Jazz Group. According to Ben, he "has been in love with music my whole life. It is my greatest passion and hobby. My favorite thing to do is performing for people and expressing myself through music." Ben also is part of the high school's theatre club called Playcrafters which performs musicals and dramas. Ben has been Vice President of the school's Tri-M Music Honor Society, President of the High School Mixed Chorus, Director of the Pep Band and Head Section Leader of the Trombone Section of the HS Marching Band. He has participated in NYSSMA All County Ensembles: Voice/Mixed Chorus and Trombone/Symphony Orchestra/Band and in NYSSMA All State Ensembles: Voice/Mixed Chorus and Bass Trombone/Symphony Orchestra.
