Press release from the City of Louisville:
June 1, 2022
Louisville – Gun Violence Awareness Day and Wear Orange Weekend will run June 3-5 this year. Wear Orange, a national organization, uses the first weekend in June to raise awareness about gun violence prevention and to honor victims and survivors of gun violence.
In support of the movement, City Hall's historic Clock Tower will light up orange this weekend to honor survivors of gun violence. So far this year in Louisville, 164 criminal shootings and 69 criminal homicides have been reported, according to Louisville Metro Police Department's most recent data.
At Metro Council's last meeting on May 19, President David James (D-6) presented a proclamation to honor Moms Demand Action, a local group that advocates for the reduction and elimination of gun violence.
"Protecting the people of Metro Louisville is our government's highest calling. I want to thank this group for working with us to bring awareness to the tragic realities and help us in the efforts of ending senseless violence," said President James.
Across America, more than 40,000 people are killed by guns and around 85,000 people are shot and wounded every year, according to Wear Orange. The group's website states the color orange has become the defining color of the movement, because it's the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others.
