RESTON, VA — Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will be hosting a public hearing Tuesday to consider renaming and changing the locations of a handful of polling places in the county, including two precincts in Reston. In December, the Virginia Supreme Court approved redrawn state legislative and congressional districts that will be in effect for the Nov. 8 general election. Those redrawn districts created split precincts in Fairfax County. Per Virginia law, precincts must be entirely in a magisterial district, state senate district, delegate district and congressional district. In the Hunter Mill District, the current polling place for both of the North Point #1 and North Point #2 precincts is located at St. Thomas á Becket Catholic Church at 1421 Wiehle Ave. in Reston. North Point #1 has 2,683 registered voters compared to the 1,128 at North Point #2. The combined number of registered voters is 2,811, which the county determined to be too much for one precinct. Since the current location won't logistically accommodate voting for both precincts, the board will be considering a recommendation by county staff to move North Point #1 to Aldrin Elementary School at 11375 Center Harbor Road in Reston and renaming it the North Point precinct. The current North Point #2 precinct would remain at Thomas á Becket. However, to avoid confusion, the proposal recommends renaming it the "Piney Run" precinct. If approved, the changes would go into effect on June 22, which would allow the county enough time to notify voters of the changes before the November election. Members of the public can provide feedback on the proposal in-person or by phone during Tuesday's public hearing, which is scheduled for 4 p.m., at the Fairfax County Government Center. To sign up to speak during the meeting by phone, call 703-324-3151, TTY 711 to get started. Feedback can also be submitted by emailing [email protected] or mailing to: Department of Clerk Services, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Suite 552, Fairfax, VA 22035. Voters in the North Point #1 precinct, which is currently at the St. Thomas á Becket Catholic Church polling place, will be moved to Aldrin Elementary School if the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approves a proposal at Tuesday's public hearing at the Fairfax County Government Center.
