NAPERVILLE, IL — A Naperville police officer fatally shot a man who "charged" at him with a hatchet while the officer was performing a traffic stop near Bond Street and McDowell Road late Friday morning, according to police.
Police say the officer had pulled over a vehicle around 11 a.m. when a man in his 20s pulled up next to the car the officer had stopped, got out and approached the officer while holding a hatchet. The officer, who is a 22-year veteran of the Naperville Police Department, fired a shot that hit the man.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. As of June 3 at 3 p.m., his name was still being withheld, pending family notification.
The Naperville officer was not hurt during the incident, a news release said.
An investigation is being conducted by the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office and DuPage County Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team (MERIT).
