Press release from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools:
6/2/2022
Rae'Kel Massey will graduate from Julius L. Chambers High with an outstanding academic record, as well as a story of personal perseverance and strength. Propelling her across the stage will be not only her own strength, but the support of her mentors, including Chambers Principal Erik Turner.
"He's been a friend to me," Rae'Kel said. "He doesn't judge me, he supports me and even called to check on me and my mom."
Rae'Kel's mother experienced a health crisis, and Rae'Kel became both a nurse and a caretaker. She helped her mother with medical treatments and minded her younger brother. Turner encouraged Rae'Kel to keep up with her academics and keep an eye on higher education opportunities.
"Rae'Kel was a member of our varsity cheerleading team and consistently demonstrated school spirit, character and integrity," said Turner. He said he's proud of the progress she made in high school that will transfer to the workforce.
With encouragement from Turner, Rae'Kel joined the Road to Hire program, where she truly gained confidence. At first, she wasn't sure she wanted to attend college, but a four-year scholarship from Road to Hire changed her mind. She has her sights set on Johnson C. Smith University, where she wants to pursue psychology or nursing.
For those entering high school, Rae'Kel has some sage advice. "Stay focused and stay on task," she said. "A shot at college is possible."
