WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — The rate of increase in new coronavirus cases in Western Springs dropped in the last week, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. As of Sunday, the village had 739 such cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 30 from a week before, or a 4.2 percent increase. That's lower than the previous week's 5.5 percent. It's the lowest rate of increase in more than two months. The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths remained the same at four, with the last one reported as being on Nov 21. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 58 or older, according to the county medical examiner. The figure compares to 49.6 in La Grange Park, 52.8 in Darien, 55.5 in Hinsdale, 60.3 Clarendon Hills, 62.6 in DuPage County, 63.4 in Elmhurst, 68.6 in Burr Ridge, 68.9 in suburban Cook County and 75.9 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 937,909, up 4.2 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 15,969 state residents. Nationally, 18.9 million people have caught the virus, up 7.5 percent from the week before. A total of 390,901 people have died from the virus in the United States.
