Whatcom Community College invites applications for a Maintenance Mechanic 1 (Class Code 626J) position in the College's Facilities and Operations Department. Under general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs various maintenance related tasks to effectively maintain and develop our campus facilities and student housing to meet the highest expectations for cleanliness, safety, functionality, aesthetics, and customer service with a focus on continuous innovation and improvement of facilities. This position interacts with the supervisor, co-workers, student housing occupants, and various members of the campus community to accomplish work. Designated work will be assigned by the supervisor. Some work assignments may also come from the supervisor or leads through verbal, electronic or written work requests. Responsibilities The successful candidate will perform a variety of duties including, but not limited to: -Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on all types of mechanical equipment such as electrical drive motors, laundry, kitchen, hospital, laboratory and HVAC equipment; changes oil, greases, changes or cleans filters, drive belts, sprockets, shafts, and bearings to ensure proper operation; -Incumbents work independently and utilize a general knowledge of several related fields such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical work; -Repairing, assembly and installation of furniture, equipment and campus property; -Light carpentry, sheet rock repairs, painting, and framing; -Assisting and coordinating duties of Support Associates in basic job functions; -Furniture and equipment moves; -May make trips off campus to pick up supplies, materials, keys, signage, etc. -Responds to campus emergencies, building alarms, emergency repairs, and inclement weather conditions, which on occasion may be outside of normal work hours; -Perform building lock/unlock and basic inspection; -Snow/ice removal; -Perform related duties as required, which may include general maintenance; -Requires punctual and regular attendance; -May include participation in rotating on-call list for after-hours response. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: -Valid Washington driver's license and insurability. -Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the Maintenance position including lifting up to 50 pounds and standing/walking/stooping a good portion of the shift, as well as ability to climb ladders and working above head. -High School Diploma or GED AND two (2) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work. Preferred Qualifications: -Computer competency and knowledge of MS Windows operating system (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.). -Proficient knowledge of painting, carpentry, sheet rock, interior finishes and the use of related building materials. -Experience in preventative maintenance and repairs of all types of mechanical equipment such as electrical drive motors, laundry, kitchen, hospital, laboratory and HVAC equipment; changes oil, greases, changes or cleans filters, drive belts, sprockets, shafts, and bearings to ensure proper operation. -Semi-skilled and sub-journey level knowledge of Plumbing, mechanical, and or Electrical systems. -Basic knowledge of low voltage lighting, fire, HVAC, and access control systems. -Ability to work independently to accomplish work and assigned areas of responsibility. -Develops innovative ideas that provide solutions to all types of workplace challenges and brings ideas to supervisor. -Earns the trust, respect, and confidence of coworkers and public through consistent honesty, forthrightness, professionalism, and clear communication in all interactions. -Actively contributes to a work environment that embraces diversity and uses diverse perspectives to enhance the attainment of organizational goals. The Successful Candidate will Demonstrate: -An understanding and follow applicable standards to establish/maintain a safe work environment. -The ability to adapt easily to changing business needs, conditions and work responsibilities. -Good communication with customers to ensure effective completion of work orders and maintain excellent customer service. -The ability to focus on tasks, work independently, and handle interruptions appropriately. Salary and Appointment: -Range 44G, full-time salary starting at $3,987 per month with periodic increments to $4,509 per month. -Per Governor Inslee's Proclamation 21-14, state employees must be fully vaccinated no later than October 18, 2021. Shift and Working Conditions: -This position will work Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm. Work schedule may vary depending on specific needs of the college. The position requires the ability to work both indoors and outdoors, often in inclement weather. The ability to safely handle power, trades tools, equipment and other maintenance related products is essential to this position.
