Book Summaries: All Different Now: Juneteenth, the First Day of Freedom Written by Angela Johnson Illustrated by E.B. Lewis Published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers (2014) Through the eyes of one little girl, All Different Now tells the story of the first Juneteenth, the day freedom finally came to the last of the slaves in the South. Since then, the observance of June 19 as African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. This stunning picture book includes notes from the author and illustrator, a timeline of important dates, and a glossary of relevant terms. Told in Angela Johnson’s signature melodic style and brought to life by E.B. Lewis’s striking paintings, All Different Now is a joyous portrait of the dawn breaking on the darkest time in our nation’s history. Islandborn Written by by Junot Diaz Illustrated by Leo Espinosa Published by Penguin Random House in 2018 Every kid in Lola's school was from somewhere else. Hers was a school of faraway places. So when Lola's teacher asks the students to draw a picture of where their families immigrated from, all the kids are excited. Except Lola. She can't remember The Island—she left when she was just a baby. But with the help of her family and friends, and their memories—joyous, fantastical, heartbreaking, and frightening—Lola's imagination takes her on an extraordinary journey back to The Island. As she draws closer to the heart of her family's story, Lola comes to understand the truth of her abuela's words: “Just because you don't remember a place doesn't mean it's not in you.” Gloriously illustrated and lyrically written, Islandborn is a celebration of creativity, diversity, and our imagination's boundless ability to connect us—to our families, to our past and to ourselves. Reader:Karen Breer Karen has lived in Freeport for the past 15 years and has lived in Lake Placid NY, Ontario Canada and Rochester NY where she grew up. Karen is a jack of all trades, master of none, and has held various jobs in college Admissions, as a kayak and canoe instructor and sales, as a NY state guide and as a Disability Claim Manager for Prudential Insurance. Karen volunteers with ACAF and the diverse book story hour as she has a love of books. She is a step mom to 2 grown children (26 and 23) and a mom to a daughter who is in 2nd grade at Morse Street School. There are 3 transracial adoptees in her family so she knows the importance of having diverse books for families like hers and for all families. Her family enjoys hiking, biking, camping, kayaking/canoeing, traveling, skiing, snowshoeing, going to the beach in the summer and being with family and friends. This event is FREE, though Donations are always welcome.
