Description

TAMPA, FL — The Hillsborough Community College Ybor City Campus will host two free Japanese traditional music concerts and workshops on Tuesday, June 21, at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Participants have the opportunity for a hands-on experience and a Q&A at the end. The event is hosted by the HCC Ybor City Library and Music Department, in a collaborative partnership with the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, Japanese Culture Promotion and Management and the Tampa Bay Library Consortium. Led by Dr. Joseph Amato, the workshop-style concert will trace Japanese traditional music and musical instruments, specifically the 13-string koto and the more modern 17-string koto, through solo/ensemble performances to provide an inside look at performance techniques and musical styles. The koto is a traditional Japanese musical instrument that dates back to the Nara Period (A.D. 710-794) and is still being used in various new ways in the 21st Century, including in contemporary musical styles such as Broadway musical theater, rock music, etc. Additional artists include Yuuji Mitsuta of Delray Beach on the 13-string koto and Zachary Niederhauser of Tampa on the 17-string koto. This is a free event with limited seating. Performances will take place on June 21 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets must be reserved at https://payit.nelnet.net/form/OhwH8wol. The Japanese Traditional Music Program at Morikami Museum was established in 2017 by Dr. Amato with initial and ongoing funding provided by Toshiba International Foundation. The yearly summer program includes a weeklong children's workshop on the 13-string koto and taiko, as well as a weekend adult workshop on both the 13-string koto and shakuhachi. As part of the program, concerts and workshops are held directly at various universities, libraries and summer educational programs throughout Florida, as well as via online presentations throughout the United States. This project is funded under the provisions of the Library Cooperative Grant program awarded to Tampa Bay Library Consortium Inc. Florida's LCG program is administered by the Florida Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services.
