PORT JEFFERSON, NY — Aidan Kaminska, a star athlete from Port Jefferson, died unexpectedly this week at 19. A football and lacrosse standout at Port Jefferson High School, Kaminska was a sophomore lacrosse player at the University of Massachusetts.
Newsday reported that the university reported that Kaminska died on Monday at his family's home in Port Jefferson. No cause of death has been released to the public.
Kaminska was a redshirt freshman midfielder at UMass, where he was named to the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll in 2021.
Kaminska was known for his infectious smile, being a good friend, and a tremendous athlete, his obituary says.
Port Jefferson Superintendent Jessica Schmettan sent a letter to district parents on Tuesday.
"The district was informed of the sudden passing of one of our alumni from the Class of 2020, Aidan Kaminska. Our thoughts and prayers are with the former student's friends, family and loved ones during this difficult time. I offer my deepest and most sincere condolences to the family, staff and friends who suffered this great loss."
Kaminska became the first Division I lacrosse commit to hail from Port Jefferson when he committed to Stony Brook University in 2019.
While playing at Port Jefferson High School, Kaminska he set a Long Island record for receptions in a high school football game in 2019.
Kaminska is survived by his parents, Glenn and Lydia; his older brother, Connor; his grandfather, Robert J. Johnston, Jr.; his grandparents, Fred and Betty Kaminska; as well as a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins, according to his obituary.
