LONG BEACH, NY — This weekend's celebration is 100 years in the making. As the city of Long Beach commemorates its centennial this year, the activities set aside for Saturday and Sunday will be special. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days, the weekend event will take place in front of City Hall on West Park Avenue. You can expect dozens of arts and crafts vendors and numerous food trucks in the plaza. On Sunday, the city will host a centennial parade at 9:30 a.m. The route goes from the recreation fields to Kennedy Plaza. The parade will be led by someone recreating Mayor William Reynolds, Long Beach's first mayor in 1922. Marching bands and various school clubs and organizations will join the parade. At the conclusion of the parade, a Heritage Walkway Brick dedication and installation of the Centennial Time Capsule. The time capsule arts and essay contest winners will also be revealed. And, of course, where there's a birthday, there will be cake.
