Description

The Bach in Baltimore Orchestra is proud to present A Summer Soiree, on Sunday, June 5 at 4 pm at Grace United Methodist Church, 5407 N Charles St., Baltimore. This instrumental concert showcases a quintet of concertos from some of our other choice Baroque composers, including Handel, Vivaldi, Telemann, and CPE Bach. Our final concert of the season showcases some of the area's finest musicians including Ronald Mutchnik, viola; Kimberly Valerio, flute; Sandra Lisicky, oboe; Gita Ladd, cello; and Christopher Schroeder, organ. The concert features Handel's Organ Concerto, Op. 4 No. 2. Handel first gained fame as a virtuoso organist before his compositions became widely known and his Organ Concertos were written specifically to show off the full range of a masterful player's skill. Contemporaries felt Handel's own playing "opened the organ in such a manner as astonished every hearer" and "neither themselves, nor any one of their acquaintances, had ever before heard such extempore, or such premeditated playing, on that or any other instrument." Another featured work included is CPE Bach's Cello Concerto in A Major. CPE Bach, the most famous and accomplished of JS Bach's musical progeny, was a key figure of the Empfindsamkeit movement, which reacted against the austere and formal kind of music the elder JS Bach composed. Using methods borrowed from rhetoric and poetry, works associated with the Empfindsamkeit movement injected more dynamic and dramatic qualities to heighten the emotion. Rounding out the concert is Vivaldi's Concerto for Flute in G minor and Telemann's Concerto for Viola d'amore, Oboe d'amore and Flute. Admissions to our Summer Soiree are $25 for adults, $10 for students, and $5 for children under twelve. Tickets must be purchased in advance, online at BachinBaltimore.org, or by calling 410-941-9262. Tickets will not be sold at the door to ensure touchless transactions.
