Safe work habits and protective gear will be emphasized while making basic projects out of forged steel. Instruction will encompass the basics of blacksmithing including: tapering, twisting, bending, slitting, drifting and riveting. Students can expect to make focused objects as they learn important techniques that every smith uses when stepping up to the anvil. Ages: 16+ Kinetic Sculptures with Ryan Woodall - think iron fidget spinners! Saturday, July 30, 10 am - 4 pm Whereas most classes offered at the Forge focus on the creation of practical objects such as hooks, knives, or fire pokers, this 6-hour class is designed to be a student's first foray into the world of sculpture and metal art. The course covers everything a student would need to know in order to create a piece of desktop sculpture which will balance precisely atop a forged steel base and spin for over a minute given the proper energy. Don't worry if this sounds intimidating. Whether you are looking to expand the reach of your artistic eye or you don't believe you have one, this class will provide ample instruction through demonstrations, example pieces, and hands on experience to allow even the newest metalworker to create a project that they will be proud to have made. Fee: $120 Coat Hooks with Ryan Woodall Sunday, July 31, 10 am - 4 pm This course will cover many of the basic techniques used in both the blacksmithing and bladesmithing trades such as tapering, splitting, bending, scrolling and riveting. At the start of the class, students will vote on one of the four coat hook designs provided on the available handouts. Those in the class will then be guided through the steps of creating their own wall mounted coat hook. Students will leave their time at the forge with a working knowledge of hammer technique, tong control, and proper forging posture. This class is an excellent option for an aspiring hobbyist or someone who wants a deeper understanding of the mechanics behind the craft of blacksmithing. Fee: $120 We also offer other forging and welding workshops here :Roswell Art Workshops
