Press release from the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce: May 31, 2022 West Des Moines Mayor Russ Trimble will be hosting the annual Mayor's Bike Ride at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2022. The ride will start off from the Raccoon River Park Nature Lodge (2500 Grand Avenue, West Des Moines) after brief remarks. Mayor Trimble will be highlighting the Raccoon River Pedestrian Bridge project by recognizing major donors, kicking off the public fundraising campaign, and making a special announcement. The 620-foot bridge will directly connect Raccoon River Park on the north side of the Raccoon River with Walnut Woods State Park on the south. The $7.9 million bridge project, designed by Shive-Hattery, is one of the five signature quality of life initiatives included in the City of West Des Moines Five Waters Project. Over $2 million has been raised for the bridge through grants and private donations to the $3 million capital campaign. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2023. When complete, this iconic bridge will serve as a connection from Raccoon River Park and the City's 69-mile trail system to Walnut Woods State Park, Brown's Woods, Purple Martin Lake Water Recreation Area, Hidden Valley Soccer Complex, Great Western Trail, and a future trail system south of the Raccoon River. "In my first year as Mayor of West Des Moines, I'm excited to host the Mayor's Bike Ride," Mayor Russ Trimble said. "In addition to showcasing West Des Moines' great trail system, this year's ride gives us a special opportunity to highlight the Raccoon River Pedestrian Bridge project and recognize our project partners." The Mayor's Bike Ride is a featured part of Park Palooza, a free community event that kicks off a summer full of recreation in West Des Moines. The event is free, and pre-registration is not required.
