GRESHAM, OR — A 16-year-old boy was charged with second-degree murder after he was arrested arriving at David Douglas High School Thursday morning, Gresham police said.
The boy was charged in the death of Leonard Madden, who was found fatally shot by the intersection of Southeast 190th Street and Southeast Yamhill Street on May 18, police said.
The boy, whose name was not released because of his age, was also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful use of a firearm, police said.
The boy was being held at Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center.
Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidy has not said whether the boy will be tried as an adult.
Police arrested the teen after following a car that picked him up and drove him to the high school, where he is a student, police said. Police saw a handgun in the car and took it into evidence, police said.
"We empathize with the trauma our community is experiencing because of continued gun violence," Gresham police Chief Travis Gilbert said. "The Gresham Police Department is committed to tirelessly working on this issue and addressing the root causes. "
