What you likely mean when you say “assault rifle” you mean “scary black rifle”. Because you have been conditioned to think that anything that LOOKS like an “assault” rifle IS an “assault” rifle. This is the new rifle I purchased less than a week ago: AAAAH! An “assault rifle”! Actually, it’s a semi-automatic (one shot per trigger pull).22lr rifle. Is it potentially dangerous? Of course! It’s a gun. Is it an “assault rifle” or a “weapon of war”? No. I mean, I suppose you could carry a semi-auto.22lr into a war zone, but I don’t think you’d end up having a very good day.
