MANSFIELD, MA — A police officer was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at an apartment building in Mansfield Wednesday morning.
Firefighters responded to 17 Francis Avenue after receiving word that a fire broke out around 5:53 a.m.
Once crews arrived, they say apartment 13 was fully engulfed in flames, with thick smoke throughout the entire building. Members of the Mansfield Fire Department were able to knock down the flames, and additional firefighters worked to evacuate everyone from inside.
An initial report from the Mansfield Police Department found that the ground-level floor of the building is now completely uninhabitable. A few other apartments were also affected by the smoke damage, displacing several residents.
No one in the building was injured, but one police officer was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. As of 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, there has been no update on their condition.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Mansfield Fire Department and the Mansfield Police Department.
The American Red Cross is currently assisting those displaced by the fire, police said.
