Milford: New Rules After Beach Brouhaha

MILFORD, CT — Recent incidents at the town-operated Walnut Beach have prompted city officials to enact new rules in an attempt to curb misbehavior at the site. Highlighting the unrest was a Memorial Day brouhaha in which city police officers were knocked to the ground and their body cameras stolen at the 113 East Broadway park. Footage of that incident swept through state media circles and prompted the latest action from the town, which released new beach protocols Wednesday, citing both overcrowding and unruly behavior there. Starting today, the City of Milford is employing added parking restrictions for Walnut Beach's lots and limiting the entrances to the facility, the aim being better, safer monitoring of who comes in and who comes out, according to a city release issued Wednesday. In addition, city leaders said there will be new personnel assignments to the beach to watch over events there. The announcement, which was sent out by Milford Chief of Staff Justin M. Rosen, stated the Milford Police Department will monitor social media announcements promoting unauthorized, unpermitted events there. Rosen said in the release those who organize or participate in illicit activities will be prosecuted. "Milford's coastline is our community's most treasured asset and the city will do whatever it takes to ensure our beaches remain a safe recreational resource for families to enjoy," wrote Rosen's announcement of the new protocols for the beach.
