Description
SUMMIT, NJ — Expect to see a lot of orange t-shirts, hats, scarves and other clothing in Summit on Friday evening, as a Wear Orange rally for gun violence prevention will take place at Village Green.
This weekend, a number of Wear Orange rallies are scheduled in communities across the U.S., to remember those who have died and to call for further firearms regulations.
"Join us to mourn the senseless loss of life to the scourge of gun violence," the Summit event page reads. "Let's focus on how our community can end the epidemic, and rally to pass common-sense gun legislation."
The rally is Friday, June 3 from 5-6 p.m. at Summit Village Green (365 Broad Street), according to a news release.
The Wear Orange movement began after 17-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed on a Chicago playground in 2013.
"Soon after this tragedy, Hadiya's childhood friends decided to commemorate her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others," the movement's website says.
For the Summit event on Friday, co-sponsors include BRADY, Moms Demand Action, Ceasefire NJ, March for Our Lives, The National Council of Jewish Women, Union County Democrats, Summit Marches On, Summit Interfaith Council, Action Together NJ, Summit Municipal Democrats, Summit Area Indivisible, Westfield 2020, and Students Demand Action.
