POSITION SUMMARY: Operate one or several types of power construction equipment, such as scraper, motor graders, trackhoes, backhoes, skidsteers, or front-end loaders to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement. May maintain equipment in addition to other duties. Reasonable Accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. •Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects •Adjust handwheels and depress pedals to control attachments, such as blades, buckets, scrapers, or swing booms •Start engines, move throttles, switches, or levers, or depress pedals to operate machines, such as bulldozers, trench excavators, road graders, or backhoes •Locate underground services, such as pipes or wires, prior to beginning work •Align machines, cutterheads, or depth gauge makers with reference stakes and guidelines or ground or position equipment, following hand signals of other workers •Load and move dirt, rocks, or other materials, using graders, or related equipment •Drive and maneuver equipment equipped with blades in successive passes over working areas to remove topsoil, vegetation, or rocks or to distribute and level earth or terrain •Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members •Operate tractors or bulldozers to perform such tasks as clearing land, mixing sludge, trimming backfills, or building roadways or parking lots •Repair and maintain equipment, making emergency adjustments or assisting with major repairs as necessary •Check fuel supplies at sites to ensure adequate availability •Connect hydraulic hoses, belts, mechanical linkages, or power takeoff shafts to tractors •Operate loaders to pull out stumps, rip asphalt or concrete, rough-grade properties, bury refuse, or perform general cleanup •Keep records of material or equipment usage or problems encountered •Operate equipment to demolish or remove debris or to remove snow from streets, roads, or parking lots •Perform all laborer tasks, including but not limited to: Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, or compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, or rakes, etc. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Competency Statements •Accountability - Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions. •Reliability - The trait of being dependable and trustworthy. •Safety Awareness - Ability to identify and correct conditions that affect employee safety. •Communication, Oral - Ability to communicate effectively with others using the spoken word. •Responsible - Ability to be held accountable or answerable for one’s conduct. •Self-Motivated - Ability to be internally inspired to perform a task to the best of one’s ability using his or her own drive or initiative. •Working Under Pressure - Ability to complete assigned tasks under stressful situations. •Detail Oriented - Ability to pay attention to the minute details of a project or task. REQUIREMENTS: •High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) •Valid Driver’s License •Ability to pass a background investigation and drug screening •Current (within 3 years of hire date) Federal OSHA 10-hour Construction Certificate (or completion of the course within 60 days of employment)
