BALDWIN PARK, CA — A family member of two teenagers struck by a hit-and-run driver in Baldwin Park died trying to apprehend the driver Tuesday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
According to sheriff's investigators, a 35-year-old man was stabbed to death by the hit-and-run driver when he and other family members tried to chase the driver down. The fatal attack happened at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday,
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies responded about 1:30 p.m. to the 3400 block of Cosbey Avenue, near the intersection of the San Gabriel River (605) and San Bernardino (10) freeways, on an initial report of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian, according to Deputy David Yoo.
Deputies found a 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy suffering non- life threatening injuries at the scene, and they were taken to a hospital.
"During their investigation, (deputies) learned the suspect crashed his vehicle into an unoccupied parked vehicle and fled the hit-and-run scene on foot," Yoo said. "Family members attempted to detain the suspect a short distance away, at which time the suspect stabbed the victim... in the upper torso. The suspect fled that location on foot but was eventually detained by El Monte police officers several blocks away."
The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was withheld pending notification of his next of kin. Authorities did not release the name of the suspect in the fatal stabbing.
