SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A New York City man was arrested Monday in Southampton Village and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, police said. According to Southampton Village police, at 3:22 a.m., Radovan Varchola, 49, was arrested on Little Plains Road and charged with misdemeanor aggravated DWI. Police were also called to the scene of a crash at the beach parking lot on Little Plains Road that turned into a "heated verbal altercation" between the parties, police said. Varchola, who was driving a 2020 BMW 228i, was leaving and drove his vehicle directly in the path of the oncoming police car, which had its emergency lights activated, before stopping, authorities said. He was placed under arrest and then, taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after he continuously said that he was going to inflict self-harm, and began banging his head against the jail cell walls, police said.
