DETROIT — A 12-year-old girl died Tuesday afternoon after she was struck by a car on the beach at Belle Isle in Detroit, police said.
A 14-year-old girl, who was also struck by the car on the beach, was upgraded to stable condition Tuesday, police said.
Officials said a four-door Mercury sedan struck the young girls when his car left Riverbank Drive and onto the beach at 8:15 p.m. He never stopped after striking the girls, police said.
Police arrested a 23-year-old Ypsilanti driver who they said was driving the car on Detroit's west side, officials said. Police also said they found the Mercury.
The man was still in police custody as the investigation into the crash continues.
