Lifeguards Not On Duty When Teen Nearly Drowned In Lake Quinsigamond

WORCESTER, MA — A 16-year-old who was pulled from Lake Quinsigamond on Memorial Day was in a no swimming area, and was in the water after state lifeguards had left a nearby beach, according to officials. Worcester police on Tuesday reported that a 16-year-old slipped underwater near 6:30 p.m. on Monday near Regatta Point. Passersby pulled the teen to shore, where first responders treated him before taking him to a Boston hospital for treatment, police said. The near drowning happened at the North Beach section of Regatta Point, which has "no swimming" signs posted. Lifeguards began working at freshwater and saltwater beaches across Massachusetts on Saturday, including at the Regatta Point beach. The lifeguards had ended their shifts for the day when Monday's near drowning happened. Beaches are not fully staffed at state parks yet. The Lake Quinsigamond Regatta Point beach will get 7-day-a-week lifeguards beginning sometime in June, according to the Department of Conservation and Recreation Worcester police said Tuesday they are still investigating the incident, and did not have any update on the teen's condition.
