The top-ranked Staples Girls' Golf Team had much to celebrate as it wrapped up the home season on Wednesday, May 25.
The Varsity squad shot its best home score of the season, 172 ( versus Trumbull's 197), lead by two players shooting their season lows. Senior co-captain Leni Lemcke shot a one-over par 39 from the white tees, and sophomore Kathleen Coffey carded a 40. Both players had two birdies.
Playing in her final home match, after four years starting varsity, was senior Lizzie Kuehndorf. Juniors Keeva Boyle, Reilly McGeehan and freshman Rachel Pontoriero (birdie) also contributed to the victory, but have many more future rounds of Wrecker golf.
Playing right behind varsity, the JV won its final match of the season, 230-254. A score of 45 earned junior Ellery Vishno medalist honors. Contributing to the JV win were sophomores co-captain Cammie Rubino, Erin Odale and Eliza Edward, junior Coco Laska, and freshman Aviva Ross.
Just over the Westport/Fairfield border at the par-3 South Pine Creek Golf Course, juniors Lila Botur and Margaret Huber took home second place out of 11 teams in the JV Championships on the same day of the home finales.
"The JV team is a great group of smart and dedicated girls who love their team and the sport of golf. They worked hard, kept their focus and enjoyed the season," summarized Coach Maureen Fontana.
The West-division champion varsity Wreckers (14-1) wrap up the regular season Tuesday against East-division champions New Canaan Rams (15-0) at Fairchild Wheeler. The FCIAC Championships are Thursday, June 2, high noon at Fairchild Wheeler. State championships are Monday, 8:30AM shotgun at Tashua Knolls.
