Amp tester!!

I had an amp tester in L.A. screwed me out of a lot of money. We are buying state of the art Marshall clones that have been hot rodded. Where Marshall uses 6L6 we are using EL34's We need a great ear to what sounds not good, but great. We are dealing with various tube brands, to get a perfect match. I'm in sales, so when Mel in L.A. tells me that switching brands require a bias change and his amp tech is charging $150 to do that, to me that even sounds ????
