Handprints Heal Footprints is designed to increase cultural competencies and to assist in creating a more culturally responsive, safe space for all staff and clients. In this seminar, we will explore:
In the transition to positivity, how might we pursue the positive side of social justice? How might we grow the conversation of social justice, without changing the topic, to transition from a blame dialogue to one of appreciation, affirmation, validation, and respect? How might we help ourselves and other discover and unleash something inside us that wants to contribute to bettering the world?Dr. Herring is the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the South Fayette Township School District. In October 2019, Dr. Herring and two South Fayette High School seniors started a student-led organization called, SHOUT (Social Handprints Overcoming Unjust Treatment). SHOUT uses the Handprints Heal Footprints framework to help school districts create and maintain culturally responsive, safe spaces for all students, faculty, and staff. Assisted by Dr. Herring’s leadership, SHOUT has rapidly grown to have chapters in over a dozen school districts in seven counties in Western PA. Additionally, the students of SHOUT have written a book, RAISE YOUR VOICE: The Stories of SHOUT, hosted multiple events to increase the cultural competency of communities nationwide, and hosted their 1st Annual HANDPRINTS HEAL FOOTPRINTS: An Uncommon Conference on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in June 2021.
