The days are getting warmer and the natural areas in our city are bustling with life! Join Washington Park neighbor, ecologist, and self-taught forager Kristian Williams to see what’s growing in Washington Park! Washington Park is home to a lagoon encircled by prairie and woodland plantings that attract butterflies, bees and other pollinators and many birds. The natural area is one of 90+ such spaces in Chicago. It is tended by community volunteers and park district staff and contractors. We’ll learn about the plants that call Washington Park home, meet some of the pollinators that help the plants thrive, and learn a bit about the uses that some of these plants have to people.
We will meet at the Fountain of Time Statue near the intersection of the Midway Plaisance and Payne Dr. The trail is flat, and is a mix of paved and packed dirt paths with some benches for rest points. There are no restrooms along the way, but the field house is nearby. There are public transit options nearby, and free parking spots all throughout the park. Need a ride or willing to offer one to another attendee? Join the Out In Nature WhatsApp group to coordinate a carpool!
Pack a water bottle, sunscreen and insect repellant. We will have loaner binoculars on hand for those who do not own a pair (and we'll teach you to use them!). We advise wearing closed-toed shoes.
