Longtime TPD Officer, Mechanic Retires After 50 Years Of Service

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Leroy Lane has been a familiar face around the Tuscaloosa Police Department since the 1960s and this week saw the retired cop retire for a second time. Leroy Lane, 86, was first hired by the Tuscaloosa Police Department on June 21, 1964, where he would work as a police officer for 25 years. He retired as a lieutenant in December 1989. Lane (left) during a retirement celebration this week at TPD headquarters (Tuscaloosa Police Department) He would return, however, in April 1997, going on to become "the very best Harley Davidson mechanic around," according to the police department. Known for his ability to diagnose motorcycle problems just from the sound of the bike pulling in to the shop, TPD praised Lane's vast knowledge and for always keeping the department's motorcycles running. "Officers arrive at the motor shed at 7 a.m. to do a pre-shift check of their bikes, but Leroy has already been there since 6:30 ensuring each one is serviced and road-ready," TPD said in Lane's retirement post. "He's the absolute best at what he does because he cares so much about the safety of the officers who spend their days on these bikes."
