***For Immediate Release***June 2, 2022- Dedication of the “Birth of Fun Historic Marker Chitlin’ Circuit Volume 15 with Reception 4pm: Join the 1901 Building Group; the North Carolina Arts Council; the North Carolina Museum of History; the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and Performing Artists to dedicate the first historic marker to the Birth of Funk Music in historic downtown Kinston, NC (Queen and Gordon Streets). Innovative musicians like Kinston native Nathaniel ‘Nat’ Jones helped create Funk music for the World! 5-7pm: “Fancy Chitlin’ Circuit”-Dessert Reception hosted by Artsy Choci at the 1901 Building; 129 N. Queen Street; Kinston, NC will feature keynote speaker, authentic Chitlin’ Circuit musicians who played with Nat Jones and James Brown, as well as American Idol Ashlee Altisse. NORTH CAROLINA FOLKLIFE INSTITUTE WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2021 The rhythm-derived musical genre of funk was popularized in the 1970s and 1980s, however its roots extend back earlier still. Famed musician Nathaniel “Nat” Jones of Kinston, and other African American musical pioneers from eastern North Carolina played a vital role in shaping its development and bringing it to the masses. In 1964, funk legend James Brown hired Nat to serve as songwriter and musical director for the James Brown Orchestra. As a result, Nat brought on fellow local Kinston musicians to the band.
