TOMS RIVER, NJ — A Toms River man who was hit by a Toms River police car on Sunday night was wearing dark clothing and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol when he was hit, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said Monday. The prosecutor's office said authorities are still investigating the incident that happened about 10 p.m. Sunday on Fischer Boulevard. William Carberry, 42, of Toms River, was trying to cross Fischer Boulevard near the intersection with Adams Avenue when he was hit by the police car, which was northbound on Fischer, Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said. Carberry, who is listed as stable, initially was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River, but then was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment of his injuries, Billhimer said. "Initial evidence indicates that Mr. Carberry was wearing dark clothing, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was crossing outside the designated crosswalk at the time he was struck," Billhimer said. The Prosecutor's Office Vehicular Homicide Unit and Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit are investigating.
