The Memphis and Shelby County Juvenile Justice Board was established for the purpose of preventing unnecessary entry or deeper contact by youth into the juvenile justice system while improving community safety. The function of the Memphis and Shelby County Juvenile Justice Board is to provide advice and direction to Memphis and Shelby County to: Develop and implement juvenile justice programs, Work collaboratively with partners in seeking program and systemic improvements and policy changes addressing the emerging and changing needs of Memphis and Shelby County youth at risk of delinquency and Promote and partner to reduce racial and ethnic disparities within the juvenile justice system. This meeting of the Memphis and Shelby County Juvenile Justice Board is being called to re-acquaint those who represent the governmental partners and community stakeholders, who initially indicated support of the Board, with its history and ongoing efforts and to determine their desire to remain as active members of the Board. State Representative Torrey C. Harris will serve as the Moderator for this meeting. We will look back at the history of the Juvenile Justice Board as we look to its future. A brief history of the Board will be given by Past JJ Board Chair Ronald Pope. The meeting will also include a Panel discussion that will help give guidance to the Juvenile Justice Board as it makes decisions as to the role it can and should take in addressing the rise in juvenile crime. It will also help participants envision their organization’s role with the Board going forward. Panel members will include Memphis and Shelby County Juvenile Court Judge Dan Michael, Dr. Altha Stewart, Director of UTHSC Center for Youth Advocacy and Well-Being and JJ Board member, and Memphis-Shelby County Schools Deputy Chief of Safety Gregory Sanders, also a JJ Board member. Your voice on this Board is so valuable, both to the youth of our city and to the safety of the entire city, so please join us! Light refreshments will be available.
