"Common sense” gun legislation

Description

The term “common sense” has no meaning when it comes to gun legislation. The reason is that “common sense” is relative to the person speaking the term. “Common sense” to one person is total absurdity to someone else. Remember back 50, 60, or 70 years ago? You know... back when America WAS great? Our (basically) two party system would hold elections, representatives were elected, then the TWO sides would sit down TOGETHER to work out the solutions to various problems that BOTH sides could live with. Usually neither side totally liked or disliked what resulted, but it was what worked best for MOST American people. And America WAS great! Now, one side yells, “Ban all assault style weapons!” To them, that is “common sense”. But the other side knows that the vast majority of “assault style” weapon owner are law abiding citizens and believe that those people should not be penalized for the actions of a few. To them, THAT is “common sense”. One person on these boards has claimed several times that one “common sense” law would be that magazines holding more than 15 bullets should be banned. Hmmm. That means that my old semi-auto.22 rifle, made about 1970, would have to be banned. Really? It's magazine holds 18 bullets. And with a “speed loader” that I made for it, I can reload in about 7 seconds and have another 18 shots... just as fast as I can pull the trigger. When younger, I used the gun mainly for varmint hunting, but I did a lot of just plain old target shooting as well. Yep, I killed a LOT of tin cans with that gun. And that one person's “common sense” approach says that I should be deprived of that gun. And that person is afraid of “military style” weapons. Why? Are they “scary” looking? Would it help if they were styled to look different, but were perhaps more deadly? Did you know that many... maybe even most hunting rifles are more powerful than most AR type guns? But then, your “common sense” doesn't really make sense in that case. Now... YES!!!!! Something DOES need to be done to curb the insane number of shootings the country is experiencing!!!!! And NEITHER side has all of the answers!!!! We... our country AND our politicians... need to go back to the old ways of WORKING TOGETHER to solve the countries problems.
