ELGIN, IL — A string of fires in Elgin claimed two lives over Christmas weekend, according to fire officials. A man died on Christmas Eve after firefighters pulled him from his burning home earlier that morning, according to a news release. Officials have not yet identified the man. Firefighters searched the home and took a man to Advocate Sherman Hospital, where he later died, the release states. The Thursday morning fire was the first of five blazes the Elgin Fire Department was called to between Christmas Eve and the end of the holiday weekend. The flames caused about $300,000 in damage to four units, with several families unable to return to their homes, according to the release. Clarence Wilson Jr. was pronounced dead at 2:15 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Firefighters found Wilson's body while searching damaged units, the Daily Herald reports.
