Description
The Relay For Life movement is dedicated to helping communities attack cancer, taking place in more than 5,000 locations in over 20 countries annually. At Relay, no one faces cancer alone! Survivors and caregivers are celebrated and supported. Those lost to cancer and going through a cancer journey are honored. Relay For Life of Harford County takes place Saturday, June 25, 2- 10 p.m. at Concord Point Park. The event is free and open to the community, though registration and donations are encouraged. See www.relayforlife.org/harfordmd or email [email protected].
Longtime breast cancer survivor Marie Reid experienced her first Relay For Life of Harford County 16 years ago when a friend in her TOPS group (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) invited her. Marie walked the Survivor Lap, "and I was hooked," she said. She formed a team and since then has raised more than $34,000 for Relay, and her TOPS team has raised more than $82,000. Marie's brother is a 5-time cancer survivor; her uncle, who lived until age 101, had stage 4 prostate cancer. "I believe in the work ACS does in research and supporting cancer patients," said Marie, who was diagnosed with cancer in 1986. "The event is a fun get together with fellow survivors and families who are passionate about what they are doing. I've made lifetime friends through Relay." Marie is not only on the event planning committee but also headed planning the fanciful Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter tea party for survivors in 2019. (See photos.) So don't be late for a very important date this year– June 25, come celebrate "Decades of Hope" at Relay of Harford Co. at Concord Point Park in Havre de Grace.
