How many mass murders committed by young people who should never have had assault weapons can we endure? For Republicans, it doesn’t matter; they are in the pocket of the NRA, also known as the Neurotic Rifle Association and they don’t care about the innocent lives that have been lost. They claim the Second Amendment guarantees the right to bear arms. But they don’t consider that just like the First Amendment, the Second Amendment is not absolute. Reasonable restrictions can be placed on gun ownership. But what’s reasonable? In a 2015 study using data from the FBI and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard University reported that firearm assaults were 6.8 times more common in the states with the most guns versus those with the least. Also in 2015 a combined analysis of 15 different studies found that people who had access to firearms at home were nearly twice as likely to be murdered as people who did not. In the balance, guns are NOT saving lives or property. They are costing innocent lives. Gun owners: this country is not taking away your guns, but how about agreeing to some reasonable restrictions like preventing 18, 19 and 20 year olds the ability to purchase assault weapons, or a waiting period, mandatory training, background checks, and end of the gun show exception, just for starters? The NRA’s absolute policies have literally killed hundreds of thousands of INNOCENT people. Let’s end the insanity. The Framers did not want this. The Republicans’ unwillingness to put reasonable restrictions in place on gun ownership makes us the laughing stock of the world.
