Sketches of Spain: LIVE!!Sketches of Spain, recorded in 1959, was arguably the most successful and acclaimed collaboration between Gil Evans and Miles Davis. Featuring legendary songs such as Solea, Will o’ the Wisp, and Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo’s The Concierto de Aranjuez, this record is transcendent both as a timeless piece of music and as a record that “non-jazz-lovers” often have in their collections, as its power to evoke a particular Spanish-tinged mood of reflection is unrivaled. Considering the artistry of the late Eric Dolphy and the popularity of the late Herbie Mann, Laws is notably in the company of the most recognized and respected jazz flutists in the history of jazz and also the most imitated. Laws is one of the few classical artists who has also mastered jazz, pop, and rhythm-and-blues genres, moving effortlessly from one repertory to another. Ronnie LawsRonnie Laws is an award-winning tenor saxophonist and composer whose career has, since the early 1970s, straddled the worlds of jazz and R&B. Since 1975 he has placed seven albums in the Top 200 -- including his 1975 Blue Note debut Pressure Sensitive -- as well as tracks and albums in no less than six other categories. He has worked as an in-demand session man and live musician with a who's-who of jazz and R&B greats including Ramsey Lewis, Gregory Porter, B.B. King, George Duke, Quincy Jones, Stanley Jordan, and dozens more. Alphonso JohnsonAlphonso Johnson is an iconic musician from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania whose contributions with the electric bass set the landscape of music to come. As Weather Report’s bassist, Johnson’s warm tone and fluent chops contributed to the band’s initial breakout from avant-garde into funk fusion. His playing was featured on the songs “Mysterious Traveler”, “Scarlet Woman”, and “Cucumber Slumber” which he co-wrote. Alphonso played with the group Santana and also toured with saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist James Beard, drummer Rodney Holmes, and guitarist David Gilmore playing S.R.O. shows that stretched across Europe and Japan. Johnson has taught all over the world and in 2004 was appointed Adjunct Professor of Music at the University of Southern California and Part-Time Lecturer at The California Institute of The Arts. Josef LeimbergLos Angeles-based trumpeter and composer Josef Leimberg had a lengthy résumé before he became known to a broader audience through his work on Kendrick Lamar's platinum-certified, Grammy-winning To Pimp a Butterfly. He arrived during the early '90s as a member of the short-lived rap group Mad Kap, King Tee associates who were among the early acts on Loud Records. After one album with that group, Leimberg shifted into session gigs. During the remainder of the '90s and the early 2000s, the artists who featured his work included Volume 10, Busdriver, Freestyle Fellowship, and Snoop Dogg. Leimberg's exposure increased toward the end of the 2000s and into the 2010s with bold additions to Erykah Badu's New Amerykah, Pt. 1, Sa-Ra's Nuclear Evolution: The Age of Love, and Shafiq Husayn's Shafiq En' A-Free-Ka. He also appeared on a crop of Robin Thicke albums. After working with Big K.R.I.T. and Funkadelic, Leimberg co-wrote, co-produced, and appeared on "How Much a Dollar Cost" and "You Ain't Gotta Lie (Momma Said)," two of the deeper highlights on To Pimp a Butterfly. The next year, Leimberg gathered fellow Pimp players Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington, and Bilal, along with the likes of Jimetta Rose, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and recorded his first album, Astral Progressions. A progressive fusion of spiritual/cosmic jazz, soul, and hip-hop, it was released in October 2016 on the World Galaxy label. Todd Simon will work with Gil Evans' scores to bring to life arrangements similar to those that Quincy Jones brought together for Miles Davis' life time celebration performance at Montreux in 1991!!!
