BOSTON, MA — After three years of pandemic-motivated silence, the 2022 Boston Calling Music Festival came back with a bang on Friday. Day one had something for everyone, a highlight being jumping from Cheap Trick to RÜFÜS DU SOL and Avril Lavigne. Cheap Trick had quite the crowd gathered at the festival's Red Stage. The audience knew pretty much every word to every song, so obviously we are all still pining for the 70s. Robin Zander sported a sailors suit and fans in the front of the audience threw around a beach ball. As one of the most energetic starts to Friday's party, it's clear that some things just don't become obsolete. The band kicked off their set with "Hello There" and "Dream Police" and the audience's energy only increased as they moved on to "She's Tight," "Ain't That a Shame," and "I Want You To Want Me." As one of the most highly anticipated bands of the festival, the Australian group RÜFÜS DU SOL played a high energy set that included fan favorites "Like an Animal" and "Sundream." (Jimmy Bentley/Patch) On the Blue Stage, Avril Lavigne brought fans a recipe for nostalgia with her 2002 hits "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi," finishing off her set with "I'm with You." For a second, it felt like we all stepped into a time machine, to where pop punk was the biggest thing on the radio. Though, it wasn't just the nostalgic hits that had the crowd singing to every word. Newer tunes like "Love it when You Hate Me" from Lavigne's latest album "Love Sux" brought just as many sing-alongs. Avril Lavigne at Boston Calling 2022.
