Here are the top three stories in New Orleans today: After 17 years of post-Katrina repairs, the Army Corps of Engineers has finally completed the new system of 'floodgates, strengthened levees and other protections.' The new system is 130 miles long and should hold off a storm surge of 30 feet. (U.S. News & World Report) After U.S. Department Of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm paid a visit to New Orleans, Mayor Cantrell issued a statement regarding the visit and how New Orleans is 'uniquely positioned' to pioneer a new wave of green energy technology and practices. (Press Release Desk) New Orleans City Council member, Oliver Thomas, hosted a crime summit in the lower ninth ward on Thursday night that brought out over a hundred people to talk about the increasing crime wave New Orleans has been suffering. The main topic of the night was concerns about the effect heavy crime has on youth and many proposed solutions and offered opinions.
