Mr. Leonard had a long and distinguished career in professional baseball, playing 15 years in the Negro Leagues (1934-48) with the Homestead Grays, and appearing in a record 13 East-West All-Star games. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972, and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1974. After a successful community petition led by his family and the Buck Leonard Association, the Rocky Mount City Council voted unanimously in May 2019, to officially designate the Walter “ Buck” Leonard home as a Historical Landmark.
