PITTSBURGH, PA — After nearly three decades with the department, Scott Schubert on Friday said he plans to retire as Pittsburgh's chief of police. In a statement released by the city, Schubert, who has served as chief of police since February 2017, said he made the decision to allow someone else to hold the position. "There has been no greater professional or personal joy than to have represented the city of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police," Schubert said in the release. In his 29 years with the department, Schubert held many positions including a patrol officer, detective, commander, and assistant chief. During this time, Schubert led the establishment of the Pittsburgh Police Community Engagement Office. Schubert also created a partnership with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins to build relationships with inner-city kids. He also oversaw the implementation of body-worn camera use among all officers in an effort to increase transparency and accountability. In a statement, Schubert said he has never regretted his decision to become a police officer. "Being a police officer is truly the only profession I have ever wanted to pursue," Schubert said. "To put on this uniform every morning still fills me with such intense pride, but it's been the opportunity to work with our officers and the community to create a more equitable, safe, and inclusive City of Pittsburgh that has been my greatest passion and motivating force as chief." Schubert's final day as chief is July 1. Deputy Chief Tom Stangrecki will serve as acting chief until a new chief is named.
