Press release from St. Louis Science Center:
May 25, 2022
On this date in 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced his intention that the United States "… land a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth" by the end of the 1960s. This speech is generally seen as the start of the Apollo program and the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Kennedy's goal was realized in 1969 when Apollo 11 landed on the moon and returned home safely.
