ELMHURST, IL – An Elmhurst resident received an email this week from someone posing as the principal of Edison Elementary School, police said.
In the email, the suspect asked the resident to buy gift cards for Teacher Appreciation Week, according to a report. The resident complied and forwarded the gift card information to the suspect, police said.
Teacher Appreciation Week starts May 2. Police said the scam happened May 24.
Another scam involving gift cards was reported Monday.
According to Elmhurst police, a resident in the 200 block of North Glade Avenue received a call from someone purporting to be with Amazon.
The suspect convinced the resident to transfer money via Zelle and buy three gift cards.
The resident was able to stop the transfer through Zelle. However, the three gift cards had already been used, police said.
Virtually any transaction requiring gift cards is a scam.
