MURRIETA, CA — An inmate suffered an unspecified medical emergency and died at the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta, authorities said Friday.
The detainee, whose identity was not immediately released, was discovered unconscious in his cell at the southwest Riverside County jail about 5:40 p.m. Thursday, according to sheriff's Capt. David Holm.
He said correctional deputies and in-house medical personnel attempted life-saving measures until county fire paramedics reached the location, but all of the resuscitative efforts were for naught.
The inmate was pronounced dead at 5:59 p.m.
"The cause of death will be determined by the coroner's bureau," Holm said. "There are no signs of foul play."
The fatality is the fifth in-custody death in the county's correctional system within the last four weeks. It was the second one reported Thursday.
Sheriff's Sgt. Edward Soto told City News Service he did not know the results of the autopsies performed on the three other inmates, none of whom were identified.
"I'm unaware of any common threads at this time," the sheriff's spokesman said. "The investigations are ongoing, and there is no further information available."
Anyone with information regarding the most recent inmate death was asked to contact investigators at 951-696-3452.
