CHARLOTTE, NC — Police have launched an investigation into a fatal single-car crash that occurred Sunday evening in southeast Charlotte. The crash occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Sardis Road North, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. According to a police report, a 2018 Hyundai Tucson traveling southwest on Sardis Road ran off the road as it entered a curve, striking a utility pole and downing power lines across the road. The driver of the vehicle, identified as 71-year-old James Loring Webster, was pronounced dead at the scene, CMPD said. "Webster was not wearing the provided seat belt and suffered fatal injuries," CMPD said. "Alcohol impairment and excessive speed appear to be contributing circumstances in this collision. No other vehicles were involved." CMPD said an investigation into the crash remained active and ongoing, and said anyone who has information about the incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
