Description
I handle personnel for The Moonlight Serenade Orchestra (MSO), a long-time fixture here in San Diego. The MSO typically fields 17 instrumental pieces (big band: 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, bass, piano guitar, drums) and two or more vocalists. We play standard big band arrangements and target our presentations to dancers. Big Band Jazz, but also Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, bossa nova, pop. Polkas, Tangos, Rumbas, Cha Chas, Foxtrots, Disco!
We are well into the summer season, some of our regulars go on vacations or otherwise become temporarily unavailable. It is a bit like running a baseball team, 9 on the field, but you need a bullpen and a bench. The show must go on...
I'm looking for a few new players; a competent trumpet player, as well as a competent trombone player to fill all the chairs. Selected individual(s) will need to attend two rehearsals (Wednesday, June 8, and Wednesday, June 15; 6-8:30 pm) in order to play a gig on Sunday June 19 (2-5 pm) at the Coronado Ferry Landing. Free parking at this event, which is no small matter in Coronado. The event is outside, but we have tent pavilions to cover the musicians, mostly.
This will pay, a little. The venue pays us a small honorarium, and we keep the tip jar out front. We do this mostly for the glory. The Coronado Ferry Landing on a Sunday in June is quintessential San Diego. This sights, sounds, smells...a sensory cornucopia of delights.
Send me a paragraph or two about yourself relative to this opportunity. How long on your instrument? Play with other ensembles? San Diego Symphony? Local garage band? How would you rate your skills generally? High School or above? College or above? What does ii-V-I mean to you?
The need for additional players for the MSO will continue well beyond this gig, so readers should feel free to apply even if you can't make this specific event. Dust off that horn and get playing!
