Press release from the Snohomish County Government: May 27, 2022 The first memorial of its kind in Snohomish County to honor military veterans killed in post-9/11 conflicts will be unveiled Memorial Day 2022 ARLINGTON, Wash., May 27, 2022 – A portion of the Centennial Trail will be rededicated on Memorial Day in honor of Snohomish County residents who perished during the Global War on Terror (GWOT), 9/11/2001 to the present. A sculpture by a local artist and interpretive kiosk are also a part of the veterans memorial. The memorial will be the first in Snohomish County to specifically honor military veterans killed in post-9/11 conflicts. The memorial will be located at the approach to the Haller Bridge where it crosses the Stillaguamish River. This location along the Centennial Trail is a popular destination for recreation and will provide a peaceful setting for reflection and prayer to honor the brave people lost to recent military conflicts. "The Global War on Terror and related military activities engaged a generation of young men and women who served us all," said Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers. "Most made it back without significant physical injury, but many did not. For the eighteen precious souls from Snohomish County who gave the ultimate sacrifice, we are re-dedicating the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Arlington and adding a new sculpture in their honor.
