POLK COUNTY, FL — Following a Texas elementary school massacre, Polk County Public School District will not allow backpacks at all school locations for the final few days of the school year.
The district sent out a press release Tuesday evening that said this is a precautionary measure.
"It is not uncommon for schools to implement additional security measures during the last days of the school year, when it is no longer necessary for students to carry backpacks or large purses," staff said.
Nineteen kids and two teachers were killed inside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, Tuesday. A mass shooter was able to get inside the school. Police shot and killed the shooter following his rampage.
Students at Polk County Public Schools will be allowed to bring bags no larger than a small box to their school Wednesday until the last day, Friday, May 27, a school news release said.
Lunchboxes will still be permitted, school officials said.
School staff said if you feel that your child needs accommodations regarding this change, please contact your school's administration.
