Join the Younger Lawyers Division as they host Morning at the Federal Courthouse on Wednesday, June 15, 2022. Morning at the Federal Courthouse gives young lawyers and law students an opportunity to observe and learn about federal practice. Registration starts at 8 am and the program will begin at 8:30 am in U.S. District Court, followed by observations of motions and sentencing by participating judges. During this program participants will choose their schedule from court proceedings and panel discussions presented by federal practitioners and judges. CLE Schedule: (3 hours of CLE for Young Lawyers) 8 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. Registration8:30 a.m. – 9 a.m. Welcome remarks 9 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. Observe civil motion and/or criminal docket of participating Judges. This schedule will be posted in early June.9-10 a.m. Professionalism from Bench and Bar CLE (1 professionalism hour)Strong advocacy should be done in a professional manner, which includes cooperating and working with opposing counsel to resolve cases. This panel will discuss and evaluate the importance of professionalism in the practice of law. Panelists: The Hon. Ivan L.R. Lemelle, District Judge, U.S.D.C. – EDLA; Amanda Howard Lowe, Kean Miller LLP|; Cayce Peterson, JJC Law LLC; Moderator: Atoyia S. Harris, Proskauer Rose LLP10:10-11:10 a.m. Federal Practice Tips for Young Lawyers (1 hour) Panelists will discuss the nuts and bolts of practicing in federal courts. They will highlight some of the differences between state and federal practice and discuss what young lawyers should expect when litigating federal cases. One of the biggest tips for young lawyers practicing in federal court is to know the local rules! Each court is different, and even some judges have their own rules. Panelists: The Hon. Jay C. Zainey, District Judge, U.S.D.C. – EDLA ; Kristen Amond, Mills & Amond LLP 11:20 a.m.-12:20 p.m. Legal Writing by the Numbers: A Judicial Survey of Dos, Don’ts, and Other Tips CLE (1 hour) Have you ever wondered what the judges REALLY think about your legal writing and common briefing tactics? The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana’s district court and magistrate judges completed an anonymous survey on various issues of legal writing, including most persuasive writing styles, pet peeves, and the like. Local practitioners have compiled the judges’ responses and other feedback and will present an empirical analysis of the results, as well share the judges’ dos, don’ts, and other tips.
