MADISON, NJ — *Due to thunderstorms, the prayer vigil, originally scheduled for this evening, has been rescheduled to Sunday, May 29 at 1:30 p.m. on Waverly Place, borough officials said.
A community vigil is being planned for Friday night in Madison to honor the lives lost recently in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York.
The vigil will take place at 7 p.m. on Waverly Place.
"While nothing can fill the holes in the hearts of so many, coming together can help the healing process, and therefore, all are invited to join," officials said.
On Tuesday, an 18-year-old gunman opened fire inside a Texas elementary school, killing at least 19 children and two adults. On May 14, ten people were killed in another mass shooting at the Tops Supermarket in Buffalo.
Leaders and officials across the nation, including in Madison have shared their thoughts on the tragedy.
"Our thoughts are with the families of Robb Elementary School and the community of Uvalde, Texas as they cope with the murder of 19 students and 2 teachers. Parents in Madison and across our country went to bed last night with the thoughts 'what if this happened to my child?' We cannot comprehend the suffering they are feeling from this," Mayor Robert H. Conley said. "As a community, we feel their pain, as a country, we must address the leading cause of death for children, firearms."
